I was thinking no idle might be a MAP sensor.
What's the best way to test it. Is there a procedure of this?

Possible causes for idle speed lower than expected
Air Induction System Throttle Body Operation Intermittent Condition PCM Have you tried the procedure below to check for code? To get the codes, put the key into the ignition, push down the odometer reset button, then turn the key to RUN with your finger on the button - and then release the button. The odometer will go through 1111111 through 999999, then display the car's serial number, then show the error codes starting with P. I'm not sure what the other displays mean. Here's the old method which may work if the first one doesn't: move the key from Run to Off to Run to Off to Run within five seconds. It does not always work the first time. (Run is JUST before Start). The code will show up in the odometer - thank your lucky stars for this, since the codes used to get blinked on the engine light. This could be frustrating since they sometimes seemed to pause in the wrong place...

Add to list of possible problems
1. Vacuum leak 2. Low fuel pressure

This happen to my Nissan when I would drive it, it acted like it wanted to stall. Turns out there was dirt in some sensor and it got cleaned when I did a tune up and egine bay wash down.
I had to rev it into the 5000 RPM range to get it to run long enough to get where I had to go before the tune up.

Hey, Thanks guys for all the helpful hints.
I think it's a vacuume leak. Intake somewhere. I'll check it out tonight after work. It seem to run fine after 1000RPM. It takes a little foot work to keep it hummin. I used to drive a VW bug w/ a bad carb. 3 pedal 2 foot method. I've been crankin it to 6000RPM w/ no prob. Kenne Bell Computer upgrade make it go that high. Normal idle is about 800RPM. Hence the problem.

I had the same problem when my MAP sensor was failing. It was at least 30 miles of stalling at idle and bucking all over the place on the highway if I moved the throttle at all before the engine light came on and produced codes. Apparently when the MAP sensor fails the computer uses the other inputs that still work to estimate where the timing and fuel mixture should be so that you can still get home. The problem is that with any change in load the computer can't adjust quick enough without the input from the MAP. I also had the same symptoms when I burned up a plug wire, but that through a check engine light and cylinder misfire code right away.
I didn't think you could get any codes off the onboard diagnostics unless it produced an engine light. Steve
