Default eror codes 0344 0016 0522

Hi all have just joined and hope you can help

I am getting the following error codes 0344 / 0016 / 0522 on my 2004 PT standard base wagon not a turbo

Symptoms engine warning light
Oil light comes on sometimes when i start the car if i turn the car off and restart then it goes away

car runs fine for about 6 miles then suddenly loses power I can then nurse it along at 60mph cannot use accelerator hard or it hesitates cannot pull away fast or it hesitates badly will not go over 60 mph

If i leave the car standing for about 2 hours i can then drive it normally with normal performance for about 9 miles then it starts again

please help don't want to change unnecessary parts

Welcome to the forum! (From one newbie to another )

I pulled out my Haynes manual, and here's what I found:

P0016 is "Crankshaft/Camshaft timing misalignment" and P0344 is "Camshaft position sensor intermittent" This leads me to suspect the timing belt. I don't know how many miles your PT has, but I would guess it's over 80,000 (at an average of 10,000 miles per year.) The recommendation for changing the timing belt is 6 years/90k, so it's overdue. Your performance problems are probably related to the belt. It could be a faulty sensor(s), but I would have the belt replaced anyway, since your mechanic will likely have to get pretty deep into the engine to diagnose them.

P0522 is "Oil Pressure sending unit input below acceptable voltage." I'm thinking the oil pressure sending unit went bad on you. My '04 Durango does the same thing with the oil light, and I suspect that there, too. I haven't gotten around to replacing it (it's a complicated repair: I'd have to drop the entire front axle assembly!), but that's what I would have checked. Since the timing belt has to be removed to replace the oil pump anyway, you might be able to get everything done in one shot. It's also possible this is related to the timing belt, but only your mechanic can tell for sure.

Even though this isn't good news, I hope this helps you.

I did some searching and the P0344 points to the camshaft sensor. P0016 can point to either cam shaft or the crankshaft sensor or a timing issue. I would replace the camshaft sensor with a genuine replacement from a dealer and I would also replace the magnet. The P0522 points to the oil pressure switch. They are a known point of failure and again I would replace it with a genuine one from a dealer. Replacement ones form parts stores have been known to be hit or miss.

HOLD ON with dropping the front axle. Most of the guys who replaced the Oil Pressure Sending Unit went from the top of the engine. the battery and few parts of the air filter system comes out pretty easy and they reached down over the top of the engine to replace the sending unit, NOT a complicated repair.

Wooops! read that wrong, it's the Durango that needs the front axle dropped to do the sending unit. Sorry. Ours (PT) as I said, isn't that bad.
