Default Do I Need A New Computer For My 2004 PT?

Hello, this is my first time posting. I am not very car savvy so I apologize for my description of the problem. The check engine light is on displaying a code 0301 for misfire in cylinder one. My car is a 2004 PT Cruiser and runs choppy while idling, has trouble going up hills if I don't have a good bit of momentum and has trouble accelerating in a hurry. The confusing thing is that it does all of this randomly. Some days it runs great and then ten minutes late is doing all of this again. The spark plugs are fine and a new coil has been installed. My current mechanic checked the compression in cylinder one and said it looked great. He then went on to see if there was enough juice getting to the coil and the starter when the engine refused to start. He is at a loss and thinks that a built in anti theft device thought that the car was being stolen and shut the engine down. He thinks I need to have a dealer reactivate the engine and that I might need a computer software update from the dealer as well. I didn't know this could happen nor did I realize you needed to get software updates for your car. Does this seem likely? Could it be something else? Is my only option to get the car towed to the dealer, an hour drive away? I apologize for this long post. This is a new mechanic for us and I appreciate any advice and help you may have. Thanks!

Well if I were guessing I would say a cam postion sensor would be more likely than the PCM, but I don't know, I doubt it's the PCM. I think your gonna need a tow cause it sounds like your guy is out of his comfort zone

You didn't say anything about the spark plug wires and they can go bad just like the plugs. As Chip pointed out, the mechanic seems like he's just guessing at what it may be and I think you need a diagnostic from the dealer or other mechanic.

At least you found out that compression is good with cylinder one. The anti-theft device (if it's OEM) will let the car start but shut off after a couple seconds and from what I'm hearing fro you, the engine refused to start altogether (which is something you through in later). Were all the fuses in the PDC (fuse box in the engine compartment) checked as there's some in there that will not let the engine start if blown.
