Default Died on Interstate

Was told (2006 PT non turbo) my timing belt suddenly went out of nowhere (died on interstate). Mechanic says needs new motor because valves are damaged. One sound....car conks out at 55 mph, and I need a new engine? What seems wrong with this picture?

How does he know your valves are bent did he replace the belt and do a compression test ?? From what i have read 9 out of 10 times they are ok. Need to move this over to the Tech and performance section for more input.

Good mechanics are like good politicians, no such thing!

Both of them are liars and cheats and out to take money that isn't theirs

Charles,

I've moved your post (and the next 2) over here to the Tech & Performance section).

What the others have said .....find another mechanic who isn't just taking a guess as to what's wrong with you PT. The PT is a non-interference engine which means the most that could have happened is valve damage. There's a slight possibility that a couple of valves may be bent because you were "at speed" when the timing belt broke. That alone wouldn't constitute a new engine.

What mileage do you have. We recommend on this forum that the timing belt (along with a couple other things) be changed at or before the 100,000 mile mark.

There is a lot of misinformation about these engines. Even Rock auto a well known parts vender here lists the 2.4 as an interference engine. So not any wonder so many mechanics think this. It wasn't until I came here that I found out for sure myself. I have been working on cars all my adult life. Find some one knowledgeable about these. It's still pricey to have replaced. But no reason to just toss the engine unless its cheaper that way. I agree with most of the guys above, just need another opinion.
