Default 2005 2.4Turbo "VWHOOP" sound (video)

If you know what it is please help.

The noise is intermittent and only lasts a second, it doesn't really change with speed and comes from the engine compartment just in front of the driver. It has happened at idle but I have hovered over the engine for 15 minutes, camera rolling to record the sound without a peep it only to have it vwhoop just as i am shutting it down.

Come on big brains and tell me what this is!

Man, that's a weird one. Never seen or heard anything like that before. Just taking shots in the dark, but are you using the Mopar rice plate? (blue plate) Have you checked or cleaned the IAC valve? Any vac leaks?

Have you checked all your plumbing to/from the IC? Especially the hot-pipe down under the engine? When my intake started sucking in, it got loose right at the air cleaner box, and it made this almost farting sound when I hit the accelerator. The whoop sounds like what Chris is maybe suggesting. The growl, not sure, but doesn't sound good to me. I'd put that up on a lift or the front on stands with the tires off the ground to test it out.

Sounds like its drunk. Too much alcohol in your gas?

I've never heard a car make a noise anything remotely like that. However, the suggestion to check belt tension seems wise.

The noise itself sounds like a vibration that is quickly dampened out. It's kind of like the noise made when hitting a taught guy wire. The only thing I could think of like that could vibrate like that would be the belts.

This car is totally stock and has only had filters, oil and spark plugs changed since we got it in 2010. I had thought it might be belt tensioner until I had my head sticking out the window and it sounded like it came right out of the turbo.

Will check all the plumbing to and from it today and especially the one from the cleaner because (it just occurred to me) my son left the door open overnight a month or two ago and had to jump it the next day. He might not have put everything back tight.

Nope -air supply seems good. I am going to replace the tensioner pulley and serp belt to eliminate that. It pisses me off because it has made the noise at idle but never when i have my head near the engine compartment. I must have sat there for 15 minutes this morning idling , revving, waiting...got in and drove it and then when backing in the driveway VWHOOOP!

That effing demon is sitting under the intake manifold laughing at me. I will find him, by Oden I swear, and rip him asunder when i do!

Honestly, if it were a belt/tensioner issue, it'd happen while stopped (at idle, revving, whatever). What you're doing by driving the car is placing the system under actual load, and you're spooling the turbo and pressurizing associated lines.. vacuum lines, bypass valve, charge pipes, etc..

Definitely not the belt.

I have been able to reproduce it fairly consistently by revving past 2000 rpm and letting off. It sounds like it is coming from the throttle area or the turbo. I took the intake hose off and could not get it to make the noise but when i replace it it VWHOOPs again.
It is VERY LOUD and scary when you are inside the hood while it VWHOOPS.

And I did clean that plate after making the video - kinda gooky.

I think my next step is taking it to a shop. AAAARRRRRGH!!!

What happens if the turbo just stops spinning?
