Red face P0551 Code Mystery

I have a 2003 PT Cruiser with 70K on the odometer. I have a P0551 code which is the power steering pump sensor. When I took it to my mechanic, he said he removed the sensor and noticed fluid inside. There were no other signs of a leak and no dripping. He dried off the sensor and the code cleared. About 25 miles later and the code returned. It sometimes goes off, but it usually comes back. Do I need to replace the pump? Is there another fix?

Unhappy Re: P0551 Code Mystery

Thanks for the info. I guess what I'm really looking for is, if the switch has fluid inside it's setting, is the pump faulty or about to fail? Or is it possible a seal just needs replacing?

if it were me, i'd buy it and see if it fixes the problem. rockauto has em for around 20 bux.

i only say that because a lot of people on the aforementioned srt forums claim it worked for them.

Thanks soyomb. That's the best advice I've gotten so far. A $20 seal beats a $400 pump. If it doesn't work I'm only out $20.

The pressure sensor is easy to replace but a messey job. There's no way to get the sensor out and the new one in without loosing fluid so be warned.
