Alternator with a short?

on my wife's 2001, the wires going to the alternator were rubbing on the halfshaft as well (seems to be an issue with the 2001's). my neighbor is an auto electrician and he soldered in new wires and made sure they were waterproofed.
unlike your problem, the wire going to the crankshaft sensor (which is in the same wire loom) was worn down to only one strand.

I did not waterproof the wiring but it should last quite a while. Her car has been great since changing all the wiring. The big problem was the wire leading to the alternator. The only thing I saw holding the wires away from the half shaft was a plastic tie wrap mounted to a metal bracket. The tie wrap had broke letting the loom sag. The alternator was fine and thank God it seems like a pain to get out.
