Default MPG

I have only had this car for two months and I have noticed the gas mileage stinks. Is 20 mpg the best I can expect and any suggestions on how to improve it?

I get around that in daily driving on my '03 turbo, up to 24-25 on the Interstate.

Sell the car and buy one that is lighter, more aerodynamic, and has an engine with modern technology. The Cruiser is my favorite of all the cars I've ever owned, but they're not known for outstanding fuel economy.

I really like the car an I bought it for 100 bucks. My plan is to drive it to work for a year or two then give it to my son for his 16th b-day. Just wish i could find something to make it get better gas milage.

If you do the long term math with what you will spend on gas between 20 mpg and say 25 it or even 28 it may not look as bad.
You might spend more to improve the MPG before it pays off.
Mostly do the the simple things, change your filters and oil, throw a new set of spark plugs(careful with the wires if they are still undamaged),and most importantly the AIR PRESSURE in the tires. Look at the tires max psi and go about 4-6lbs less.
And lastly the hardest thing of all to do is re-learn your throttle technique. Smooth off the line starts, keep your speed max about 60mph(more speed pt body is less efficient) and no long warm up or idling periods.

If your are showing tire ware on the inside or out side of a tire but not both. then an alignment could help also. I say this because the a arm bushings may need attention and will affect alignment. Also clean the throttle body out. One poster reported that although his maf was reading in tolerance he replaced it and saw an increase in fuel economy. He was complaining of similar mileage as you IDK.

I had an RX-7 and it got about the same. I upgraded the intake, exhaust and ignition. When I did the mpg went up about 10. Do you know if it would have the same effect on the PT. We do plan on keeping the car for as long as its feasible to keep it going. The car is in great shape an like I said i have 100 bucks in it an oh yeah a five dollar radiator cap.

I would recommend to perform a simple compresion check with wide open throtle body to determione the engine basic mechanical condition before starting to throw parts at it?

I read that but the intro comments are what counts? In other words it was first on your mind.

But I get what you meant.

Cruisers are heavy. They have a drag coefficient somewhere around .4. The engine lacks many design features which have been around for years that would greatly increase efficiency. But I love 'em anyway, and really don't want to drive anything else. Shrug.
