Default Fog light problem with smoke

2003 PT Cruiser limited, 83,000 miles.

Had a problem today, rather alarming at first. Driving home in daytime, no lights on, the front fog lights came on by themselves and would not turn off. After a short while alittle smoke started to come from the top of the steering coloum around the hazard warning lights button. Thought the car was going to go up in flames. After stopping and playing around with light switches etc the smoke (which was only wiffs of smoke nothing major) stopped. Since then all electrics/lights seem to work ok as does everything else except the fog lights.

Any ideas? Im no good with electrics but am thinking along the lines that something may have shorted out. All advice welcome.

Many thanks

Matt

As Ratdaddy, said, short in the electrics of the "multi-Function" switch. A know problem with the PT Cruiser. You can replace it for about $70 or if your handy with tools, try and repair it yourself. Here's the llink:

Is this known as the mulitfunction switch? Ie the stalk that comes out from the steering coloum that turns all the lights on and off?

Thanks for quick reply

I bought the car 2nd hand about 2 years ago. Ive just looked in the fuse box within the car and noticed that there is no fuse for the fog lights. So I would assume this has been a problem for the previous owner that has now come to a head. Never having used the fog lights I did not notice (and nor did the mot inspector) that they did not work.

Saying that the MOT inspector didn't realize the fog's didn't work must mean you from the UK (unless the EU has MOT inspections also). I spent 12 years in England and I know the MOT was something to dread if you had an older car.

True they didn't make sure everything worked but what they did look at, they sure gave a close inspection. Even surface rust on parts that were normally in great shape could cause you to fail the test.

But your multi-function stalk has nothing to do with that. Quite a large percentage of owners have had to fix or replace that stalk.

Many owners who bought the PT used found that the No#8 fuse in the interior fuse box was pulled because most of the time, when the stalk failed, the fog lights would stay on and run down the battery. It was easier for some to pull the fuse than fix the stalk.
