Default gas leaks at 3/4 tank and code 0442

I've dropped the tank a few times to look for a leak and it seems to be coming from the "plug" on the back of the tank. Is this plug anything more then a drain plug? I removed it and sealed it with grease around the seal and code went away and no gas leaks for a few weeks. Question being what happens if I permanently seal this plug? I was thinking of JB welding/sealing it. It didn't seem to have any problems when I used grease to seal it.

Here is a picture of the "plug" and all that lovely Ohio salt.

If you seal it use silicone, more flexible. But the gas streaks look like they go around the filler tube as well?

Probably from the last time I dropped the tank. The marks were just from that plug. I thought about silicone but I think its just gas resistant and not "gas proof" I didn't want it degraded and getting into the fuel system.

Find out what the exact purpose of the "plug" is before you seal it up...the venting and evap system on these tanks is a bit complicated...make sure that it is meant to be sealed up and not some kind of a check valve.

That's what Im hoping to find out. I put grease around it and it sealed no leaks or check engine light. Then as the grease diluted with the gas the light came back on and the leak is there

There wouldn't be a vent that low. But this could be a test port for the evap system. What about a new cap. Maybe a seal is bad?

GO to home depot and see if they have the Pink teflon tape and try that. or permatex sealant.

Stan; look up the plug/cap in the parts manual available on this site. It's free! Permatex makes a gas tank/radiator sealer I just saw on another thread. Sounds good on paper.
