Okay, now I 'm curious/confused... if the 2,4 has a chain, why does everybody change it at +100000 miles ? A chain can go a lot further than that and isn' t likely to break.

The PT Cruiser 2.4 DOESN'T have a chain. Never did, never will. Not sure how they are coming up with this. The picture isn't even correct as our belt is 4 times the length of what the eBay picture shows. That's the reason for my WHAT ???

Thats the chain that turns the two balance shafts. The small object beside the chain is the chain guide and the larger object is the chain tensioner.I don't remember one ever going bad, but I do know several owners that have removed the chain to eleminate some parasitic power loss and thus gain a few horses.

Jerry, good to hear from you. So, we DO have that chain? Just hidden from any view. Too bad they didn't think about using that for the camshafts. Shows how much I know about the internal workings of the cruiser.

99% of cruiser owners don't know about it because never goes bad, so never gets mentioned.

The owners that I've talked to that removed it, said they wouldn't do it again. It didn't give the obvious horsepower gain that they expected AND it naturally produced a little more vibration that was most noticable on the atx PTs.

Check page 2B-13 and 2B-14 in the Haynes for a more in depth explanation.

Thanks for the welcome back.

Okay, now I understand ! I was wondering cause mine (1,6) has a chain instead of a timing belt, and because the chain runs through an oil bath it's hardly gets worn.

How hard can it be ? Obtain the belt specs, convert to a nice indestructible platinum core link and ... kablam ! You're in the money... Crewzin , I'm gonna let you take the lead on this in your badassed garage... What will you need ? couple weeks ?

Don't look at me! I let my local dealer do all the work when changing the belt. On heavy equipment or any kind of equipment that's needed to do that kind of job. Garage is for show and to keep the cars in show condition.
