Default FAN REPLACEMENT?

I'm brand new to this forum so apologize in advance if this has been asked before.
I live in Mexico half the year and brought down my 2007 PT Cruiser in 2010.
I had some problems recently which i believe I overpaid for but needed the repairs.
I had the mechanic test my AC because theere is a problem.
He tested it with his computer hook up and forund that the radiator fan works on low but not high. (Another guy last month said something was wrong with the fan just by the sound the AC was making.
Anyhow the guy tells me a new fan assemblt would cost $5800 pesos to buy and labor would be around $800 to $1000 pesos. (in USD that is about $470 for the fan and another $65 to $80 USD for labor).
Now I know that isn't right for the fan so I was thinking of letting it go right now since I come back to the states in a month.
Can the car be used OK with only low speed running?

Also I would like to buy a new fan assy in the US and take it down in my suitcase when I return later in the year.
Any suggestions as to where to buy one? A Chrysler dealer or an internet parts supplier?

Would I need to buy the entire assy or would the motor be all I need?

Any suggestions would be helpful.
Thanks

You can fin assemblies on Ebay $70 - $95.

The labor seems cheap? but if that is what the shop is telling you then that at least is a good deal for you?

This comes to mind with your fan smuggling comment.......

try rockauto.com or amazon for a dorman fan which has a lifetime warranty. you should be able to change it yourself in about an hour, depending on how mechanically inclined you are. there's a writeup on the procedure in the tech forums.

the cost difference between the entire assembly and the motor isn't that much. you could take the motor out of the new fan assembly and *cough* smuggle it in a suitcase due to it's smaller size.

**disclaimer**

in no way do i condone the above actions. LOL

Thanks I'll do that.
By the way taking it in, smuggling(?), should not be a big deal. You are allowed up to $300 worth of stuff w/o paying a duty. I have brought in lots of things and if questioned they usually let it go after you show the receipt.
Thanks again.

By the way this forum is really loaded with info. Kepp up the great work!
