Default Power Steering Rack Replacement

Hi all

My poor Cruiser dumped its power steering fluid all over my driveway. I've had the problem diagnosed by a mechanic friend and it needs a new steering rack, which I've managed to purchase.

What my friend would like to know is if he can take off the steering pump and still be able to drive it, with no power assisted steering? (Knowing very little about cars I assume this is so he can move it off my drive and somewhere easier to work.)

Thanks for the help!

I've had my Power Steering Pump fail while on the road. It's a total shock when it goes out unexpectedly and makes it very hard to steer especially at very low speeds but can be done. I then had to drive about 20 miles to the local dealer for the repair since the PT was still under warranty. So the answer to your question is yes, you can drive the PT without the assistance of power steering. Just be prepared to use both hands and all your strength to turn corners when moving slow. Straight line, there's no problem at all. Don't even think of turning the wheel while standing still.

Thanks Crewzin! I noticed it was considerably more difficult to steer the night before it failed completely. Glad to hear he can physically remove the pump and still drive the car though - would be great to finally have it sorted as its a pain having to juggle our one good car (also a Cruiser!) between us!
