Default 2002 pt cruiser rough idle when cold and 0303 code

I have a 2002 pt cruiser that I have just replaced the engine in. I has a very rough idle when it starts up cold just like it wants to stall. Once the temperature comes up it runs and idles just fine for the most part. I thought it may be the EGR valve so it removed the EGR tube from the intake and plugged the hole in the intake. It seemed to start good cold so I replaced the EGR Valve with a new one but as soon as I put the EGR tube back into the intake the problem came back.

I don't know where to go next.

Any help appreciated.

Check the EGR vacuum lines for proper routing. There is a diagram under the hood? Check pcv valve and its hose.

Well, 303 is cylinder 3 missfire - when were plugs and wires last done? What gap was used? (Should be 0.040)
If plugs/wires are good, spray starting fluid along seams of intake manifold - if idle smooths out, you need to replace intake gasket.

Have just replaced the plugs and wires and yes gapped to .40 have some further info have checked all vaccuum lines and the routed good and no cracks or leaks. I knwo have a code 0401 coming up which is egr exhaust gas recirculation flow insufficient detected. Have checked and clecned egr valve no change am considering changing the egr transducer to see what happens.

Let me know iof this is a good place to go.

here is my scan tool report data

First cars ran without EGRs, then they added EGRs with vacuum transducers [whatever they are], now we have computers controlling transducers controlling EGR valves. How sweet!!!

This may be as simple as a bad wire/connection between the computer and the EGR, or a plugged/defective EGR valve. Or not.

So an update to what was going on I now an 0401 code as well as 0303 I know 0401 is EGR insufficient flow have tried changing EGR's as well as transducer and when I accelerate hard it stumbles and won't even pick up until I let off the gas and accelerate moderately.

So update to this situation. The 0303 code is gone but the 0401 code remains. Have cleared codes and just keeps coming back. I have manually pushed the EGR valve open while it was running and the car stumbled and almost stalled. This tells me the passages are open. Checked vacuum at the throttle body and lots of vacuum. Is there any way to test the vacuum coming from the transducer to the valve. What is the purpose of the backpressure hose coming from the bottom of the egr to the transducer.

gordon; I only have info from a 2001 sebring. It says there is a 20 amp fuse inside the PCM for the egr valve.

The backpressure hose sends a 'signal' to the transducer which controls the EGR valve. It may be sold only as a complete unit.

Keep us informed.
