Check engine light came on the wife's '01 (68,000 miles). Took it to dealer and the catalytic converter had to be replaced. Was fixed for free under factory warranty we were told.

If the light is on, there are codes to be read.

Some 'pending' codes can only be read by a scanner.

A trans locked in 2nd gear is called 'limp-in' mode. It's designed to salvage the drivetrain in the event of a catastauphic sensor failure.
