Default Gas Mileage for you NA PT Cruiser

I was just checking the history on some gas mileage posts, as my car is not getting TERRIBLE mileage, but worse then I would like for a daily driver. I have a 2001 5-speed, I bought it with 43k miles on it in early December. It now has 45k miles, and I am getting about 25.5 mpg. Like I said its not terrible, but for being 85% or greater highway mileage, I would like better. I heard there may be a computer problem with the 2001s that need to be flashed? How would I check if my car has had this done, since I obviously wasnt the owner when this would have been a recall.

The car is stock, and I dont drive it hard, as it is my daily driver. I save the agressive driving for the summer car, which gets 30 mpg, but still puts out another 100hp then the cruiser. Doesnt make sence to me. My guess is my problem could be plugs and wires? Maybe a K&N should be installed? Anyone have any advice for a good intake, that has helped their mileage? or exhaust?

Thanks,
Matt

Synthetic oil, an air intake (or K&N replacement filter) will all help a bit, and keep your tires fully inflated (THAT will help most).
At the mileage you're at, you should replace the plugs and wires (wires go, too). I did the platinum Champions, and Crane wires (RaceAndStreet.Com), but don't expect miracles.
The PT is tall, with the aerodynamics of a brick, and way too heavy.

25'5 sounds good to me. I get right around thaton the highway
The Cruiser is just not made to cut through the wind like a knife,
it's more like a toaster.A real cool toaster.

My other car is a 1987 Porsche 944 turbo (951). I do realize its not bad gas mileage, but I hear of people getting 29 or so highway, and Mine hasnt even come close to that is all. 25.5 is fine with me, but that little extra mileage would help out!

What do you think of the Keystone Ram-Air Box?? I am planning on doing the plugs and wires soon. I wish I would have just done it over Christmas break, but Autozone told me not to (they said the plugs were good for 100k) No, I didnt really believe them, but I decided to wait, since other then the mileage, it runs great.

Thanks for your input guys, and like I said, I dont want to complain about the mileage, I just wanted to know how others were getting better, thats all.

Thanks again,

Matt

Well I have to be honest and say that on my trip to FL over Labor Day last year I was able to eek out 27MPG in my turbo. The secret is going really far.....really slow. I think I kept the cruise on 70 the whole way there and it was a 600+ mile trip.
On my Dakota R/Ts that I had, the magic number was 60MPH. With the gearing in the rear (3.92) it would get OK (for a 5.9 V8) at that speed. The best I got in that truck was 21 doing no more than 60 for a long distance trip.Once you went over 60 it dropped like a brick to around 16 or 17 at about 75MPH.

Yea, I know what you mean about the long trips. Most of my trips are about 110 miles, from here at school in Ohio, back home to MI I drive a good 50-60 miles on 75, so I would have thought that would have helped out some. I always just set the cruise at 70 at away I go.

where do you live thats its 60 some degrees!?!? There is now about 3+ inches of snow outside right now, and it doesnt appear to be slowing down!

edit: lol, I guess I should have just read your name. Are you guys getting any kind of rain or something there in GA?

Thanks again everyone,
Matt
