Default 2005 Cruiser error codes p0340/p0325

Forgive me, i am mechanically dense here...but i need some help and directions to go.

2005 PT Cruiser, 100,700 miles (approx)

Yesterday on my way home from work, the engine light came on....about 5 minutes later, it started kind of bucking/lurching losing power on acceleration(hard to describe, almost felt like it would stall but didn't), i would ease off the gas (getting ready to pull over in case it died), but once i did that, and then lightly hit the gas again, it righted itself, but this happened over and over the whole way home. I do have leaking oil in the bottom of the car, and my transmission fluid also leaking (this has been, we've just kept adding until i can get THAT taken care of). When restarting car, it hesitated but did start. Low on Coolant, adding that. Error codes p0340 (camshaft sensor) & p0325 (Knock Sensor). Which means.... what ?? I've read around about these codes, but i still am not getting exactly what's going on, i need simple explanations i'm afraid lol.

My main concern is, i'm afraid to drive it to work and back now, because i'm driving long distances there & back (74 miles round-trip), and don't want to get stranded. Been there with a Ford twice last year- NOT fun !

Have to add, did add tranny fluid and the bucking/jerking has stopped this morning. It started up with no hesitation, and it was a short trip. engine light was still on, pulled codes at that time. Also had to add gas.

Also, i should add because it's engine-light related, that my timing belt/water pump was already changed at 78K due to water pump leak. Sticker under hood says should need replacement next at 150K.

Having a friend who knows this stuff better than me coming over, but i want to be able to tell him exactly what direction we can go from here. Thanks in advance for any advice/helping me to understand all the technical stuff.

Does your PT have the original timing belt,or has it been replaced?.......Because if it IS the original it could have 'jumped' or even 'thrown a tooth'.

Thanks for replying No, it isn't the original timing belt. I had to have the timing belt replaced late 2010 at approx 78K miles along with the water pump- water pump leaked all over the belt & it was going to go. Caught it in time luckily. The mechanic that installed put a sticker in under the hood stating date, mileage of replacement, and noted that next timing belt change would need to be done at 150K.

It could still could be the timing belt......Can/or Have you tried to do a visual inspection of it????.......It should be fairly noticable to the naked eye(missing teeth/smooth area)....You may need to crank engine(but not start/run) to be able to check the entire belt surface thoroughly......

I'll be honest, i would have no IDEA what i'd be looking at, so i'll have to wait for my friend to come over & look. I know where the timing belt is located, but is that cover over it easy to remove ? Seems kinda tight to get to it.

What does the Cam Shaft Sensor & Knock Sensor do by the way ? That's what the codes are for & i don't know what either are.

The 'Camshaft Sensor' does exactly what its title says it does......It's the position sensor so the computer knows the position of the Camshaft.....If it goes bad you can have a car that Suffers power loss, runs bad,or doesn't start at all.........As for the 'Knock Sensor' it responds to spark knock caused by pre-detonation of the air/fuel mixture; As the flame front moves out from the spark plug ignition point, pressure waves in the chamber crash into the piston or cylinder walls resulting in a sound known as a 'knock or ping'......This can be caused by over-advanced timing, overheating,or using a fuel with too low octane.(In your case probably the former!)

Thanks So he needs to check my timing belt to see what it looks like then....so much for that "next change 150k" sticker i guess LOL. It's hard to figure out what is going on when i'm not very technically inclined (not at all really haha), and there's so much about all of this i've been researching online all day. How ironic, this time last year i had a timing belt totally snap on me in my Escort driving to work, with little warning (overheating the day before, stalled twice and then the next morning---SNAP---going 50 MPH)

So i should not be lulled into a false sense of security that the car ran ok on a short trip around the block this morning ??

Cool Re: 2005 Cruiser error codes p0340/p0325

If the timing belt looks OK,the next thing I 'might' suspect it could be IS the Camshaft Sensor......It can cause the same symptoms sometimes when it goes bad.

This is a good thread on checking the timing belt...How can I inspect the timing belt?
