Default Squealing belt, dimming lights at odd times

I have a 03 2.4l 5 speed. I have a terrible belt squeal at start up. If I rev the engine a few times it will stop. But it comes back if I sit at idle for a minute or two, like at a drive thru or traffic light. I've also noticed when it squeals my lights will dim a little. It's more annoying than anything but I'm concerned I may have an alternator problem coming. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Sounds like your alternator belt has stretched or the alternator itself has moved allowing the belt to become loose. If the pulley on the alternator is turning and the belt is that loose, it's not charging the battery like it should.

You can take the passenger front wheel off including the inner liner and try and tighten the belt (or check it to see what kind of condition it's in) or have the dealer/mechanic do it.

My pt does the same exact thing and I have found that it may be the tensioner pulley (I think not sure not really mechanically apt I'm more into audio than anything) but I just installed a Mechman 240 amp HO alternator and replaced the belt and it's as tight as possible and mine still has the same symptoms as yours. It did it with the stock alt and belt too leaving me to believe that it is the tensioner pulley. I've watched it while it made that horrible noise before and it was the big pulley thats just behind the heat shielding. My Mechanic says that after awhile this has to be replaced. Hope this helps some and also check your belt as Crewzin already stated and make sure it is tightened up all the way. That belt should be so tight around the alternator that it should feel like steel almost. Hope you get your problem fixed! I know just how annoying/embarassing it is!

It's OK if it squeals, I purposely like it loose so alternator bearing doesn't fail due to excessive tension

Sounds like your's is a little too loose, tho!

I don't believe the alternator belt has a tensioner pulley ... Am I wrong here?

Not wrong. Tightening of the alternator belt is done with adjustment of the alternator itself by means of the pivot and adjustment bolts. No tensioner pulley except for the timing belt.
