Question ecofuelsaver ??

Did a search, didn't find any topics on it here. Picked up a 60ml bottle on sale at the local Walmart whilst pondering the Marvel Mystery Oil. Dumped in the tank at today's fill-up...

Eco Fuel Saver claims that it's proprietary catalyst (Kryptonite?) categorically 'reduces emissions' and might possibly improve MPG "in some cases" - particularly where the ECU is smart enough to tweak according to fuel quality conditions.

Since I recall reading somewhere that the PT's ECU will adjust itself to your driving habits, I thought I'd wager the five bucks just to satisfy my curiosity.

I just looked, and CanadianTire posts some pretty incredulous claims...

  • Fuel saver is a fuel system cleaner that instantly extends fuel milage up to 30%
  • Dramatically reduces emissions up to 44%
  • Will not void engine warranty
  • Safe for all gas and diesel engines
  • Each 30mL shot treats up to 60 litres of fuel

Has anybody here tried it in their PT?

I think that sums it up nicely.

Just about every name brand gasoline has all the "fuel system cleaner" already in it that you will ever need. Hype-in-a-bottle products like this are sold because enough people will buy them to keep them moving off the shelf.

For your penance, park your car and walk until you save enough fuel to add up to $5. Then go my son and sin no more.

I tend to always look at the ingredients. In this case the first is
ETHANOL 65.0 % and the second is BENZYL ALCOHOL 25.0 . So what does that tell you?

Then we look at it the fact that the safety information states "material can burn but will not readily ignite". So it "can" or has the ability to burn? Hmmm so then it may not either and where does that leave it in the combustion chamber in the ignition cycle? I would say perhaps right out the exhaust unchanged?

And to top it off what the "KOOL" green advertising does not warn you about is that this product has strong oxidizing agents. Maybe that is the secret 10% unidentified proprietary ingredient? Who knows??

Yeah, they claim the alcohol is just a "carrier" for the proprietary catalyst.
My results: not particularly spectacular.

Subjectively it struck me the car was behaving a little peppier than usual. I evened burned rubber (accidentally) last week - the first time ever since I've owned this car (about 5 months). Placebo effect, perhaps...

That aside, I certainly didn't drive any differently than normal, and managed 17 mpg over the 113 miles of pure city driving I logged. That did include about 10 miles of unusually steep hill-climb up to a local plateau golf course, but overall 17 rates as totally "average" MPGs for driving around this little town. Not the worst nor the best I have logged to date.

Then I took it on a short (70 mile) highway trip, having filled up just before leaving, and filling up again on arrival at the next city, I got pretty good highway MPG. (31)
Fair amount of modest hill climbing involved ( maybe 20%?) Again, not the best I've ever logged for similar trips, and certainly not the worst either. Mind you, the outside air temps were 98.6 Fahrenheit the whole trip, so I had the air conditioner running full blast pretty much the whole time.

I have had one highway haul where I got as poorly as 27 MPG, most are around 30, best I've ever logged is 33.

Did I save anything (dollar-wise) by pouring in the bottle of liquid kryptonite? I doubt it! Did I "save the planet" due to reduced emissions through this tankful? Impossible to tell, as I don't have access to a smogalyzer!!

Anyway I recently noticed that gas here is SIX BUCKS A GALLON. And I don't really care, to be honest. It nearly costs as much to INSURE a car here - as it does to drive the friggin thing.

So might as well enjoy a fun little car that is aesthetically pleasing, and still big enough to haul around my guitars and recording gear. If I wanted to be a Gas-miser, I would have bought a Smart4Two. But I'd never get 3 guitars, mic-stands, my tonelab and the 200 watt bass combo in it... I'd have to take up playing the harmonica!

Offhand I would say it is a simple octane booster, and would only help import engines since they expect 94-97 octane levels.

On a domestic, it wouldn't make a difference as they are designed to use 84-87.

Gas stations being what they are with big tanks in the ground are not always the quality they are supposed to be.
