Default Timing belt question

Changing nightmare: 2002 2.4 L Timing belt

Question: Is it possible to install belt 360 degrees off? In other words, is it for sure OK so long as the crankshaft pulley and crankcase mark are aligned and the camshaft pulleys are properly aligned under tension? Or can the crankshaft pulley be off by 360 degrees and everything look A-OK?

If the crank is on the mark and the cams are lined up withe the up arrow pointing up you are good. The arrows are the key on that. If you are unsure post pics of yours and we can tell you if your OK..

A full rotation is 360 degrees which would mean you are back at zero...

As long as you have all the marks lined up with both arrows on the cam sprockets pointing the same direction you will be in time. No matter if that's up or down on the arrows.

Even if you installed belt with both cam gears pointing down (the "up" upside down) it'd return to correct or "up" on next crank rotation.

Just keep both arrows going the same direction.

Thanks all. I think I am good.

My basic question is this...since the crank turns twice (720 degrees) for every full camshaft rotation, could you line everything up but the crank be 360 degrees off? I think the posts make it clear that if the crank arrow points to the reference mark, and the camshaft marks are aligned as shown, it has to be right. Thanks to all.

Another way to say it, since it is a 4-stroke engine, could you mis-install the belt to #1 TDC on exhaust stroke rather than #1 TDC on compression stroke?

I think you guys are saying that is not possible.

To hazard a guess, what would happen is your piston sequence would be switched. I am not aware that it would affect a gas engine with an ecu though since the injectors and spark would change sequence to match.

A guess on my part though, I am not a mechanic, just a dabbler.
