Default Please HELP!!!

I have an 07 Base model PT Cruiser that the clutch has gone out on. The mechanic says the part is made as a unit (flywheel clutch throwout bearing all connected and it will cost me $750 just for the part!!! Is this correct or am I getting scammed here? Thanks!

I am sure he was refering to a clutch kit, that usually comes with a pressure plate, clutch disc and throw out bearing.

IMO, If you are going to do a clutch job, you should replace it all.

The price seems high, but most shops get top dollar for parts. Googling the parts, I saw a range from the $300's to $500's.

That's pretty much the way it is, but the price seems a bit high. Unless he's using OEM parts. You should be able to get a LUK setup through Ebay for about 1/2 that.

Just went by and looked. The clutch and flywheel are pop rivetted together into a single unit. Dealer price for a new one was $1400.00. Jeez - no wonder no one wants to buy American anymore! How could someone so stupidly engineer a car?

Chrysler PT Cruiser Sachs Clutch Kit W0133-1671435 at Auto Parts Network

Try pricing a non-american clutch kit. It's doesn't get any better. Not that I am any defender of the PT... mine is being sold as soon as possible.

And no good mechanic will want to replace just the disc....

Actually, with the lack of space in there, it's about the only way to do it. Go with the Sachs, or LUK aftermarket units. Any of them should go 70k or more miles. (Depending on your driving style.)

This is for an 04 Touring model but it looks identical

It's actually not a bad idea having everything together. You almost always replace everything anyway. And, the price for the Sachs is really good for the whole set up.

I do like the car though. I just had a real bad experience with expensive fixes on a Ford (I know - fix or repair daily) Explorer. Fixed the trany only to have the crank shaft break a few weeks later. 3000 down the tubes on that one. The Cruiser has right at 178k so it won't be that long before it needs more serious work too.

Anything for your year car will be the same. (Non-Turbo) Car model won't make any difference.
