Default transmission or computer?

I had a bad camshaft sensor, and let it go for awhile. I noticed yesterday when I was driving it, it would drive fine at first, but then the RPM's would be high but I could not accelerate, then all of a sudden, it would jump and drive fine for a bit. if I stopped and restarted the car it would be fin for a mile or so, then it would repeat the issue. I drove the short distance to my destination, and about 2 hours later, I went to drive it again. it initially drove a block, then at a stop sign, I hit the gas and NOTHING. the engine would rev, the RPM's would go up, but it would not move. got it parked, changed out the camshaft sensor thinking that was causing the problem (I dont know crap about cars, just knew it was bad and I have had decreasing performance for the last week, starting it and no acceleration, but would run fine once I got at a steady speed). Got in the car, it started right up, put in drive, and again, nothing. my dad got in, put it in low gear, it went forward, he bumped it into drive, no issue. I get back in it, again, nothing. he got in again, and he put in drive an again, nothing, it just rolled back a bit as we were on a slight incline.

we did NOT disconnect the battery when changing the sensor.

thoughts?

I am by NO MEANS an expert here, but i had that happen to my car a few times where it would "stick" like that- turned out i was very very low in transmission fluid. (I have a slow leak). Just a thought, though i am sure someone much more knowledgable in car repair what-not will be along.

I couldnt get it down to a shop to diagnose. The last time i had it checked, it was just the code for the camshaft sensor.

Is it possible the extended use of the car with the bad camshaft sensor put the car in limp mode? Might explain why it would run fine briefly after restarting it, and why we could only get it to run in low gear after replacing the sensor without disconnecting the battery.
