Default Hard Starting After Fueling

This has been an intermittent problem for a month or more. When we fuel our 2004 Turbo lite Cruiser, it won't start while sitting at the pump. After a few cranks, it starts and runs rough, then eventually, within a minute or two, runs normally again. I put a new fuel pump in the car in February. We are getting P0456 which is an evap leak code. I cleared out the code and it took a week to come back, so I would assume that means it is a very small leak. The fuel pump lines can only go 1 way and I know they were put back together correctly. I read the other thread:
2001 PT Hard Start After Fueling

Seems like a very similar issue. I don't have access to a smoke machine to troubleshoot the evap system so that could be a problem. Any suggestions?

You could always puff a few puffs of a cig, and blow it into the line.

Sorry!
I thought that you'd get a lot of techie responses.
Don't forget to consider that (depending on where you get your fuel) there could be sediment stirred up after refueling.

Sounds like you replace the fuel pump, which is in the tank. So, I am assuming that you drained and inspected the tank itself.

But, it strikes me that all this happened after you replaced the fuel pump. You may have introduced a vap leak during the reassembly.

Sooner,
Yes I did inspect the tank. I made sure it was clean while I had it apart. Not too many time in the life of a car that you get a chance to visualize the inside of the tank, so I took advantage. The vapor leak is intermittent. I changed the battery today and reset the codes. So far the code has not returned. I also traced the evap lines again over the weekend. There were no obvious leaks and everything looked good to me. I pushed together all the connections I could access, but none of them moved. This one has me stumped and I just don't want to pay to fix something that is probably pretty simple.

Anyone else have any suggestions? The car drives fine other than the first few minutes after a fill up, but the issue is getting worse when it happens. Now the CEL flashes, and I am getting codes P0300 and P0304. I know those are misfire codes. Also has code P0456 which is an EVAP leak. On top of the codes the gas mileage has gone to crap.

Might find a little insight here: A p300 and p303 code question

i'd focus on the p03xx codes and not worry about the p0456 for now.

i've had a random 456 popping up for two years and i still can't find it. you can read for days on here about unsolved 456's where people throw parts at it to no avail.

update: i just ran out to see if it was still there, and now inplace of my 456, it's a p0455 "MAJOR leak". Searching for that instead, i found this post that might help you with that code. first post, 4th paragraph from the bottom. It starts out "Turns out the Filler is"

-i may have to try this on sunday if i have time.. sounds easy enough.

How are you clearing the codes.

This is sounding more like fueling issue.
