Default P0300/0301 Error codes

I have a 2003 PT 5 speed with 82,000 miles. About a week ago the check engine light came on and when in 1st and 2nd gear up to about 2000rpm, the engine would really hesitate. It was almost like popping the clutch. Above that level, it runs smooth and in 3rd, 4th or 5th, this doesn't happen at all. It seems to be worse when flooring it but slow steady acceleration will be okay. The check engine light had the P0300/0301 error code. The coil, wires and plugs (E3) were replaced 7500 miles ago. The 90k maintenance calls for replacing the PCV and I was going to replace the fuel filter as well. Is there anything else I should check/replace? Thanks in advance for all your help!

The coil shouldn't have been replaced unless you know you were having problems with it. It hardly gives anyone any trouble.

Take the plug and plug wire from cylinder one and move it to another position. See if the fault code also moves to the cylinder where you moved it to. if it stays the same, you seem to have something that would affect all cylinders like a split vacuum hose or crack in the upper manifold. You could also have internal damage and need a compressio check to rule that out.

Crewzin -

Replaced the plugs/wires as well as the intake manifold gasket. Also got the fuel injectors cleaned and the car is running great. The mechanic seemed to think the gasket was the main problem although he did find out there was some oil in the space where the plug screwed in to the engine that may have fouled the plugs. Thanks again for your info!
