Default Timing throwing off the idle?

I replaced the timing belt and water pump along with numerous other maintenance items in an attempt to keep the car from breaking down over the next year. My wife will be using it for school and will be putting quite a few miles on it. Since doing so the idle has been rough. There are no codes in it. Is it possible to be slightly off timing wise and all it affects is the idle. I have 1000 miles on it since changing the belt and all but the idle seems to be fine.

Usually it's clear that timing's off (prolly 2x threads a week on this)

If it's just rough, I'd forget about it until you have some time to check it.

Easy enough to check. pull the top cover and get a long dowel or screw driver and get the # 1 piston up top dead center and the marks should line up with each other and through the center line of the cam bolts.

Thanks for answering, Idle is starting to drive me nuts. My 2005 gmc 6.6L diesel idles better than the cruiser! The car has been sitting for 2-3yrs since my wife has had a company car but now she'll be loosing the car and I'm hoping to get this running as well as I can before she has to use it daily.

Brought the motor up to TDC and it lines up but it seems to be just a hair higher than center on the gears. Friends are telling me that it is as close as it needs to be. Not sure if I like that answer looking for some others to average it out.

Hog; try pulling a string between the centers of both cam sprocket bolts. NOTE: arrows on both sprockets must point up. If not, rotate crankshaft 1 turn.

could it be the motor mount/ torque strut not in the right place? I know there is a specific measurement for proper alignment...
