Default Clearing check engine light

OK. so I just did my first oil change on the PT. I put 4 qts in and started engine, had a check engine light at startup. Added the last quart just to be sure I didn't over fill. Still have the engine light. Do you have to do a battery disconnect eveytime you change oil to clear this light? Or will it clear itself?
Thanks

Was it on or off before you put the oil in?

Blade,

No, the "check engine" light shouldn't come on everytime you change oil, unless the code is telling you that your low on oil. YES, you have to disconnect the one side of the battery to reset the light, preferably the negative side.

You could pull up the error codes and make sure - I think it'd have to be low oil pressure, don't think it monitors oil level. I also read that after enough restarts, if problem is cleared, it'll go away on its own.

KingKole, no check engine light before oil change. It probably did show low oil pressure as I was one quart low and it takes a few seconds to pump up pressure after a oil change, strange though you guys are not getting the light after a change.

Have you checked for oil stains on the ground where you park it of anything like that. I noticed this in my oil Nissan, the oil crank seal went bad. Sometimes you can loose oil if the filter isn't set 100% right.

KingKole...yeah, no leaks, I've been doing 90% of my own mechanic work for 35 years now, even did part time work in a local shop for a while, but this computer stuff is getting to me.[]
I'me pretty sure it was a low oil pressure warning, but you would think they would have a few second delay for oil changes.
I pulled neg battery cable and all is fine now.

I always pour about 1/2 quart into filter, so pump doesn't have to fill it all the way.
