Default Need assistance please!

Hi,

Yesterday, I went to get gas and my car was running fine. When I got back into my car, I heard aloud bang (almost like an explosion). My car then sounded like it had no exhaust but started right up. I had it towed to a nearby garage and just paid $475 to have it fixed. They said my spark plug exploded but didn't damage the cylinder. They replaced all the spark plugs and ignition wires. I also had the oil changed and they did a carbon flush. My battery light comes on all the time. I replaced the battery last month. I had the alternator checked at auto zone who said it was fine. The shop checked it again yesterday and said it appeared to be charging but when they did another test (something with rippling) it appears that it charges and stops and charges and stops. The said it would cost 600 to 700 dollars to replace it. I've gotten ripped off by a couple repair shops and am hoping someone here could send me in the right direction. Thanks in advance!

WEll Ill say that $600 for a $125 alternator is pretty high to me
its not that hard to DIY and Im sure auto zone or orileys or NAPA
has them for around that

the plug exploding is kind of odd to me I can see it comming out of the head but that would usally rip out the threads and they would have to do a Heli Coil to fix it and some not all but some remove the head to do the heli coil

so for me Id go get a altenator and just replace it myself sure save you some cash

Well I have seen a plug blow out because it was not tight on install. Didn't hurt the head but made a big noise when it happened. Putting in a new set doesn't cost what you paid. The alternator job, well I would call around for pricing. They are off the chart in your part of the world.

Nawn; It could also be something as simple as corroded wires/connectors or the alternator brushes could be worn.

I had a problem before where the voltage regulator built into the alternator was bad. The alternator would test at the store as good, but as it got warmed up while driving, would start to malfunction

Tony; A good answer for older general motors cars and likely others. PT's have the voltage regulators built into the computer. Can you say 'empty my wallet, please' ?
