Question Opinions wanted: Timing belt - camshaft and crankshaft seals, too?

So, my 2005 is almost at 93K, and I am scheduled to have the timing belt, water pump, tensioner and pulley replaced later this week. I asked the mechanic about replacing the camshaft and crankshaft seals at the same time - said they can do that and wasn't that much more.

So - many of you have done this work yourselves and are more experienced at this than I; is it a good idea to change these seals, or should we just leave them alone if they are not leaking or otherwise "bad"? In other words, "If it ain't broke..."

My mechanic found a small leak with the Crankshaft seal and replaced it while doing the timing belt. If you plan on keeping the PT for awhile longer, doesn't hurt to do a little bit more preventative maintenance.

Amen brother!

I did my own and in my project thread I showed how to do the seals. Takes the same labor to replace these seals as the belt. So may as well prevent these being the oil leak that kills your engine because you forgot got to check that oil,

That's really a 'no-brainer'......It would suck to say 'no',and then a year from now have one of them start leaking, because then you have to pay $$$ for the labor again.

Thanks for responding and confirming. My original thinking was that replacing the seals was a good idea, then I started second-guessing that decision. I'm planning to keep her running for as long as possible.

Gentlemen: thank you again for your input on this. I talked to the mechanic who worked on my PT and he said "good call on the seals - they were leaking". He bitched a little about what a pain the PT is to work on, but in the end he didn't charge me any more than what was originally quoted for the timing belt work; and that was about $500 less than what the dealer wanted to charge.

That's great. I take it that it's running well. So should be good to go. Sounds like you got a good mechanic and treated you pretty well.
