Default can't see the road!

my headlights just quit. headlights and taillights. i got nothin'! perfect timing too. pulled out of the liquor store onto the highway and bam. darkness.

brakelights, hazards, signals, horn, wipers, radio, dome light, all that works.

i've played with the switch controls, wiggled wires, etc, no dice.

i checked all interior fuses, all are good visually.

i checked the underhood 40a fuse, it looks perfect and tests fine for continuity with the multimeter. reads O/L on screen and goes to 0.000 when i test it

i checked the terminals for the underhood "lighting" fuse and get 12.59v with the engine off.

now i'm going back out there to rip the headlight switch out.

anything else this might be that i should check?

background info:

headlights flickered 2x the other night, but so quick i wondered if it really happened. i think when the lights flickered the radio screen got bright, like when the lights are off. i knew i wasn't nuts though. i've delayed my remote start project so if this did happen, i would know it wasn't my fault.

There's 11 pages of schematics for the exterior lighting system in the Haynes manual. Giving it a fast look, fuses 2, 6 and 15 in the interior fuse block and 12 and 19 in the PDC in the engine compartment all have something to do with the lighting. You also have a circuit breaker in the interior fuse block that sits on top of the fuses. Also everything runs through the multi-function switch so there could be a bad ground in that.

i checked fuses 2, 6, and 15 under the dash, all test good
im not sure about the circuit breaker. there was something that looks like a relay, i smacked it with a screwdriver and re-inserted it. there's also something that looks like a big tin fuse that tests OK for continuity with the multimeter.

the fuses under the hood have names, not numbers. but they all seem fine.

back to removing the switch, still open to suggestions.

base model/no fog lights, if it matters

well i just disassembled the MFS. only a very small portion of it deals with turning the lights on and off. i cleaned 6 contacts and 3 pads, and made sure they felt springy and intact. i also crimped the connectore for the relay on the back of it so it fits tighter. i'm going out to go try it. not expecting much from doing this though. the copper didn't seem very dirty and nothing really looks wrong.

still no lights. it's not a fuse, it's not the switch.

any ideas i'm all ears.

i don't know what else to mess with. im not the best at wiring diagrams. i have no clue. i guess i'll hope i can finish work in time to get home when it's light out or i'll be at work until i wire the lights right to the battery. tonights project was supposed to be building a laptop for a homeless guy, not fixing my car. grumble..

the dimmer switch turns the dome light on and off, but does not dim the dash lights. the headlights and taillights do not work.

Pull the relay, check for continuity, and see if it looks,or smells 'melty/burnt'.....

The one in the fuse box on the drivers side;It should look like this one: BWD R3177 - Relay - Multi-Use | O'Reilly Auto Parts
You also might want to take the fuse panel loose, and look at the wiring from behind,to see if any wires are 'crispy' looking.
