Default Transmission Fluid and Filter Change Questions

Hi everyone,

I've got a 2002 PT Cruiser with just a hair over 80,000 miles (like 80,010 or so) on it. To my knowledge, the transmission fluid hasn't been changed (I purchased the car with around 36,000 miles, and don't remember having it done otherwise). So, I have a few questions, since I'm getting ready to do an oil change on the car anyhow.

1. What is everyone's opinion on those "Reverse flush transmission cleaning systems" that you see offered?
2. If those systems are decent enough, would you recommend having a "normal" transmission filter change this time around, and then go to the reverse flush afterwards?

I'm asking because I've had bad experiences with the transmission filter/flush in previous cars. On one car, the filter quoted for it wasn't the right one, so we had to clean the old filter and put it back in. On the other car, I had the reverse flush done at around 130,000 miles (only time the filter or fluid was ever changed) and it broke stuff loose inside of the transmission (stuff that was being held together by the gum, as my mechanic explained it later on). So I had to get the transmission rebuilt at a cost of $1,200+ dollars.

So, I guess what I'm saying is that if the reverse flush systems are normally ok, is it a good fit for my car, since I've probably gone 80,000 miles without having anything done with the transmission?

Thanks, and have a great weekend.
Patrick.

If your doing it your self, buy a Mopar FIlter and ATF+4

ALso go buy a Dorman pan with the drain plug, cheap at Rock AUto.

Do a pan drop and filter change and clean the magnet. Don't over fill it.

I would stay away from any flush, never know what the shop will do and what fluid they will put in.

Mostly what VNT said.

Any filter and gasket will work just fine.

I do recommend a complete flushing from a specialized for only Transmission service shop.
You could do it yourself it is a little above the normal on hand tools and what not but you could do it. If you want to I can tell you how.

Patrick, you might want to first test the fluid to see if needs replacing.

You can read about used fluid analysis at http://www.amsoil.com/lit/g2047.pdf .

Transmission fluid test kits are available at AMSOIL Oil Analyzers Test Kit, Postage Pre-Paid .

If you decide the fluid needs changing, I suggest using a detergent based chemical flush such as AMSOIL Engine and Transmission Flush .

2002 CHRYSLER PT CRUISER 2.4L 4-cyl Engine Code [B]
LUBRICANTS & FLUIDS:

Automatic Transmission,41TE......AP4
Signature Series Multi-Vehicle Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) (ATFQT)
OE Multi-Vehicle Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid (OTFQT)

FILTERS:

Transmission Filter WIX 58934 Trans Filter

CAPACITIES:

Automatic Transmission, 41TE Initial Fill..........4 quarts
Automatic Transmission, Total Fill
4 speed 41TE..........8.6 quarts

Hope this helps.

Thank you for the responses so far. As for doing this myself, I don't have access to a garage (as I live in a downtown apartment). So, it would have to be done by a mechanic.

I'll look into the testing kit, and if I decide that it does need to be changed, I'll look for a shop that specializes in transmissions. And I may combine a few responses by having them flush the transmission, and switch to the DORMAN oil pan (for future changings).

As I mentioned in the first post, I fell into the trap of seeing a new "service" offered by the place that I got my oil changed, and thought "Oh I need to do that with my car." (to the tune of $1,200+ and not having a car for a few weeks until I could pay off half). I didn't want to fall into that trap again, unless it's a god idea.

Have a great weekend.
Patrick.

I would change it. The filter is as much a concern as the fluids condition. And my automatic took 5 quarts. Any filter kit will work equally well. I personally don't see flushing as a requirement. The old fashioned way will be more than adequate. JMHO.

Patrick, here is an ATF change procedure you might like to read and pass off to your mechanic http://www.workablewebtools.com/site...Procedures.pdf .

I can help you get the test kit, ATF flush, ATF and filter at wholesale and delivered to you if you like.

Just what VNT said.
I just changed my pan to the Dorman one. But do get the FeelPro gasket separate from the filter kit. The one that comes with the filter isn't worth putting on. Its too thin.
I wouldn't do a flush if you don't need it. Just my opinion.

Change your fluid and filter skip blowing your cash on the fluid test. These ATXs in the PT Cruisers are documented known for having issues which we can directly be track to low maintenance specifically changing the fluid and filters.

For the record the number one cause of a PT Cruiser ATX specifically a 41te transmission failing is low to little maintenance.

Transmission oil and filters are cheap and easy to change. A transmission is very expensive even if you are capable of rebuilding one and changing it.

Patrick_Dickey Change the oil and filter!!!

If members choose to use AMZOIL I recommend to look in your specific area for an AMZOIL distributor, they are listed on the AMZOIL website.

A flush is highly important on a high mileage automatic transmission. Done correctly it will completely run fresh fluid thorough the transmission. BTW The pan and filter gets all the fluid last.
There seems to be a lot of misconception about automatic transmission and flushing.
