Default 01 2.4 died and won't start

My wife has an 01 she was driving and it started to smoke and died. I have checked a few basic things. The fuel pump comes on, I pulled the timing cover/guard back and can see the belt turning. I checked for spark at the coil and is good. Tried a shot of starting fluid to see if maybe an injector issue, would not start. Engine turns over fast doesn't quite sound right though. The car has a python alarm, not sure if factory one its disabled or not. Don't have any factory key fobs, just the python one. There were no trouble codes stored. Where do I start? bringing it in is the last resort.

"started to smoke" is bad. Where was the smoke? Out the tailpipe or from the engine? Did you check to see if your low on oil or coolant?

Maybe thought by now someone would have some kind of idea of where to start diagnosing this thing.

all info is in first post. except where the smoke came from. it came from under the hood. Car was warm at the time, but not throwing any heat. To sum up

no codes
spark at coil
timing belt appears to be turning

Starting to think going Chrysler was a mistake.

Except for the smoke under the hood, it sounds like a slipped timing belt. How many miles on the car and has the timing belt every been changed?

The smoke is a very important piece. Was the smoke white, blue or black? I have seen a car (not a PT) that jumped time, ran rough and blew oil out onto the exhaust manifold. Thus, black smoke. Is there a lot of oil under your hood on the engine?

White smoke, on the other hand, is usually steam from the coolant system. A broken coolant hose could cause this even at moderate engine temperatures. Also, if the coolant was very low, the temperature gauge will not read correctly. Thus your car could seriously overheat, blow out the remaining coolant causing white steam and cause a blown head gasket. If bad enough, the engine would then not run and may sound strange while cranking. My son's Mazda had this happen about two weeks ago. And gauge never read that the engine was hot, because there was not enough coolant in the engine to reach the temperature sensor. To check this, pull the spark plugs and check for coolant in the cylinders and run a compression test.

How do the fluids look? Oil, water, etc.?

Smoke + no start + odd sound cranking = head gasket to me.

this sounds like the info I am needing. I know my way around old school engines. not as good with the computer controlled ones. So it is possible for the belt to slip? because it is turning the cam sprocket. I wasn't with the car when it happened. my wife said it smelled like burned oil. So when I get a day here in the positive temps, I will take all the side covers off and look. Are all the timing marks clearly visible?

No, you should have bought a 2001 Nissan V6 like my buddy. When the time belt went in that it cost more than 3x what the PT would.

Or then there's the Audi V6, that's closer to 4x the PT ...
