Default How Do I Remove Negative Battery Bolt Easily???

I am emarrassed to be asking this but...

How do I easily loosen / tighten the negative battery terminal bolt?

Usually when I try to loosen / tighten the nut on the end, the whole bolt just rotates.

the "head" of the bolt doesn't seem to be "seated", and the bolt that came with my car has a rounded / domed shape head. So I can't grip the head with pliers to prevent the bolt from spinning.

Maybe my shop put the wrong bolt on when they changed the battery a while back??? I don't know...

I just know that it is a pain to remove the negative battery cable every time I try and clean the battery terminals.

Also, if the mechanic did use the wrong size / type of bolt for the left battery terminal, what size / type of bolt do I need?

Thanks in advance.

These get corroded on all cars, but especially the PT as battery is hidden, and it goes unnoticed. You'll need a vice grip or similar.

Could you see if the negative cable is reasonable at dealer???
There's parts manual here, and you can try thru links in my signature.

Like I said in your other post;Try some Vise-grips,and once you get it off......Replace the bolt & nut with a better one(easier to remove next time!)....Try Lowes/Home Depot (or your local hardware store) for the bolt & nut, they're less expensive at those places.

For myjeephatesme and those other frequently enough work on the car and follow the SOP about disconnecting the battery ground, reconnect (after removing old damage) using a 'quick-disconnect'.
Here pictured disconnected, one can see how I straightened the OEM ground terminal.

For the kibitzers, I have replaced the battery shield and I do have a PDC/ air-box bracket.

That's a pretty slick connector.
Where did you find that?
Did you do the positive side, too?

That's on my 'To-Do' list, for sure......And the Brass terminals are more corrosion resistant, than the stock ones(Zinc-plated steel, right?),and also the lead replacements.......From what I've heard, the only ones supposedly better than Brass terminals, are Gold-Plated terminals.(people with high-dollar stereo installs seem to like using those the most.)

Local auto parts store, likely AutoZone. Negative side only.

Myjeep; don't be embarrassed by asking questions. We are all born ignorant and try to get less ignorant as we go thru life. Before you start your battery project ----- wear old clothes ---wear safety glasses ---cover the positive(HOT) terminal completely with layers of rags, tape, etc.[or remove].

If your bolt looks like the one in Sana's picture, it's called a carriage bolt. They have a square shape under the head which keep them from turning. But when the nut gets frozen to the bolt, they spin in the terminal. If vice grips don't work, try cutting the bolt or the nut with a hacksaw or a file. Do NOT try to split the nut with a chisel.

Replace the bolt(s) with stainless steel hex bolts/nuts/washers. At most hardware stores. And grease them before installing them.

See 'confused ......' ----Page #3
