Default Air Breather upgrade ??

I am considering installing K&N, Airraid or something like them.

Does anyone have suggestions, opinions and items to stay away from.

I am not too much concerned with adding horsepower but i understand it help the engine smoother and adds 2-3 mpg. Am i on track?

The biggest improvement is elimination of throttle lag - you get faster response from the engine when you give it gas. The K&N is the best, in my opinion, but it's the pricest. You probably could get better mileage, but you'll also get a "roar" that makes you want to give it gas, so if you're like me, you come out even.

Steve,

First, congrats on the trophy at the Bartow Art Fest Chalk one up for the Tampa Bay gang!

Quick (Don)is right about the K&N and the quicker throttle response time, but I don't think dropping in the filter in the stock box will give you the "roar". That only comes with the aftermarket shorter tube-type air filters. If your trying to gain MPG, the filter, synthetic oil and a lighter right shoe are your best bets but that's hard with the turbo. The guys here on the forum have been modifying the turbo's for awhile now (mostly for speed) but there's some really good ideas on better air flow too. Check out the Turbo section.

I've had the K & N FIPK for 2 years and even though it cost more I would buy it again. I had a annoying hesitation before with the stock airbox but now it is as smooth as glass,

The downside is when you put your foot in it the noise is LOUD. Much more so than the other aftermarket air cleaner systems. If you want the noise don't by the K & N. Normal cruising you don't hear it.

IMHO the K & N is the way to go.

I got the AirAid breather (although it's not installed yet) which I intend to mate it with a Keystone Hood scoop. I'll let you know if the engine sounds louder. [8)]

I just installed the Airaid with the box about 4-5 days ago. It gives it a really good roary sound. Pefect for the turbo convert. It does make the engine perform smoother for some reason. It will also provide better response to the throttle.

I noticed before when I would pull a u-turn and give it some gas to get a good start on the traffic coming my way, I would squeel the tires and not get a very good start. The other day I pulled one of these u-turns and got all tire and no squeel and torque pull was so hard that I did not expect it and almost went in to the next lane.

I would rather not burn up my tires but get the response I need.
However off the line of a died stop, I can turn the tires, which before I couldn't. I have an auto PT TE, and yes I have fooled around with it to see what it can do now and what difference it has made.

I feel the Airaid works well and has made the PT drivablility better. Not much for more power, but does provide some. It just fells better now. It has a huge filter and runs pretty cool. If you feel the tube in the fender it is not hot aftering driving for 45 min. in mid 80's and the filter is cool too, but don't touch the sides of the box.

Well i guess if i decide to go the K&N route i will have to wait. I checked their site and they don't list a 2005. I emailed them and they answered back that they don't have one that year yet.
Oh the headaches of buying right off the truck.

Thanks for all the input.

?? Not aware of any changes from '04 - '05, but I guess they just want to be safe, or you got someone who didn't want to be bothered.[:I]

Well i perfer the "no we don't have it yet" answer from a mfg over "well it should work". I can wait a little bit.

I will just have to find some other mod to spend this money on and dig up the cash later when they do carry the filter.

What to buy What to buy
