Default The "Handy" NOPI Strut Bar Installation

I recently purchased a NOPI Twin Strut Tower Bar kit off of eBay. These kits actually come straight from NOPI but they are selling their old stock on eBay to get rid of it. I paid only $21 plus $5 shipping.

I thought I was going to do some asbestos work today but that got postponed. So this is my on-going photo essay on the strut bar installation.

First, everything about this kit is asymmetrical. Neither bars nor bracket are the same on both sides. And the kit comes with no instructions:

After trying every possible combination, orientation and configuration I can come up with, I just can't get this thing to fit. It's about 2 inches too long no mater how I turn the brackets and bars.

Without having a correct installation to compare it too, it appears that the longer of the two brackets may have been meant for symmetrical bars. But my bars are longer on the same side as the long bracket. If I flip the bar around with the short end on the long bracket, it does change the problem but does make one side stick up high enough to hit the hood. So that is no answer. And the bracket will only fit on the strut towers one way. So where they are has to be correct.

So I called NOPI at the toll free number at the bottom of their website and I asked for directions or at least a photo of a similar installation using "bent" bars like on a PT Cruiser. The NOPI guy was very nice and told me they have had these kits for a very long time and there was a chance something in my kit was not right. So they are sending me another kit "free gratis" to see if I can get it to work.

Hopefully, this second kit will either have brackets of the same length, symmetrical bars or maybe even some instructions. I will update when I know more.

You paid cheap, you got cheap.

No surprise there

if the cruise control actuator was moved, would the left bracket fit on the right side?

I will have to modify the solenoid bracket but no big deal.
Thanks for the response

Yes it would. I already looked at that. But with the brackets swapped and put in the rear positions, the angles becomes wrong.

After doing some more fittings, I've now decided that the long bracket is correct. It bolts up perfectly:

And with the left side long bracket attached, the bars fit nicely into place. They are level and there is good clearance for the engine and the hood:

The real issue seems to be on the right side. The short bracket is not short enough. If I clipped the ears on this bracket and re-drilled the bolt hole down near the base, everything would likely fit perfectly.

Even though NOPI is sending me a second kit, I may go ahead and modify this bracket. In less that 30-minutes I could then have the project done. And if the kit that comes in fits better, I'll still have a spare that will work on a PT. Decisions, decisions.

if you really want to butcher it, find a way to triangulate it to the firewall. i mean they do say that's what really makes it stiffen the chassis up, right?

According to the e-bay site there is only one left as of 5 minutes ago. It's a close out item.

if it was me I would look into re-drilling both sides to even things out and then chop off the extra.

Maybe this pic will help you, Handy.
