Default speedometer stopped working - p0500 code

We recently had an ice storm...so my pt sat for a day or so and when I hopped in to drive it to town the speedometer did nothing. It was still very cold and still had ice...this couldn't have anything to do with it could it? Anyway, the odometer, tach and all other gauges still work fine. After a day or so the engine light came on and it is showing the vehicle speed sensor code P0500. So is the speed sensor bad? If, so how hard is it to change and where is it?

There are two speed sensors located on the transmission. I would look first to assure they are plugged in and the wiring harness is intact. If so, the output sensor is often the culprit but not always. You will likely need to remove the battery tray to get at it.

1st-Gen Output Sensor:

1st-Gen Input Sensor:

I just checked the code and it is p0501 not p0500....does this mean something different. By the way, my car is a 5-speed

shelby; p0501 is also a code for the speed sensor. The picture shown is for an automatic trans. The proper socket [1" deep socket ?] makes the job easier.
