Default Shifter won't engage gears (most of the time)

In what's got to be "what's going to happen next", I'm driving my 05 PT Cruiser convertible with manual 5 speed home from work. I've gone 2 blocks - leave a red light - 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, then suddenly no 5th. Its just the shifter wobbling all over the range. It will go back into 4th, so that gets me back home. I was wondering the 1st time I stopped if I would have 1st and 2nd again, but it worked. Just no 5th and reverse since its opposite of 5th. Get home and point the car where I won't need to back up to get to work tomorrow (would rather not have to deal with this right now since I'm working 12 hours and its going to be 8 degrees tonight with snow. Now it won't go into any gear and it sloppy all over the range. Sometimes I can find a "groove" where it will go into gear. Any ideas what's up?

I've read an article about getting the shift knob off. I can't believe its not tapped. Don't know if its popped off that it will ever go back. Next question, is there an easy way to get the center console off?

Likely your shifter bushings need to be replaced. Google "Booger Bushings".
Otherwise the dealer wants to sell you the whole cable.

2001 PT Cruiser LE 5 spd, original owner, no mods, MOOG arms with spherical bushing (ride is now a bit harsher vs OEM)
- 109K replaced timing belt/WP/tensioner/idler/crank&cam seals with same 1st gen design. That was a fun day and half!
- 119K Gates water pump failed after only 10K miles. Replaced with Airtex. This time around it was a 7 hour job.

2001 PT Cruiser LE AT 59K miles. Bought used, newest addition to the family

Cool Re: Shifter won't engage gears (most of the time)

It might also help to check out this thread, among some others.......It'll make things go smoother if you DIY: How to Install Booger Bushings?

Won't I have to pull the center console out?

Another question: if I leave out to work tomorrow, might this condition leave me stranded?

See the link I posted above.....As far as leaving you stranded; It depends on how long it takes you to do it,that's why you should 'study up' first; It'll make it go easier & faster.(less downtime!)

He means driving as it is. You can cut you some rubber hose to stick on the peg to tighten the hole until you get the bushings.

You may have inadvertantly answered my question, but its 26, snowing, and dropping. I mean leaving as is and trying to make it to work (20 miles one way). Seems like its taking a chance. But I really need to go to work.
