Default 02 PT Cruiser Starter Problem? Maybe?

I have a 2002 Pt Cruiser (not a turbo). We had a bad cold snap here in Indiana and it would not start. I jumped it with my other car..well, I tried to jump it. Nothing. Car would start to turn over but simply did not have enough juice.

The next day (in 45 below wind chills) I replaced the battery with a brand new one (the old one DID test as "bad"). Still could not quite get there with starting, so I jumped it again. For about 3 hours! Trying occasionally to turn it over...got close, but it did not fire up- barely turned over.

Finally, I tried turning it over one more time and the starter did not even crank- but I saw a small wisp of smoke come up from under the battery tray. now I have power in the car- but if you turn the key you get nothing.

Where do I start??

So if I hotwire the starter and it does not fire, I can assume starter/solenoid is fried?

Have you checked the cables, connections, and grounding points?......What about the relay?

If you follow the other steps and make sure the battery is good, fully charged and that the ends (both car and battery ends) are in great shape and tight, then hotwiring the starter will often tell you if it is the starter or not.

Remember that sometimes a new battery can be bad.
