Default 2001 PT Cruiser overheated, coolant leak help!

Hi all, first time posting. I just bought a 2001 PT Cruiser Touring Edition 155K miles. First thing I did was get an oil change, and they did a basic inspection. Everything seemed normal except they told me there was an oversized plug which I would need to address before they would do another oil change. Shortly after that the check engine light came on, I ran the codes and it was an EGR valve issue (P0401). One week later, as I was coming home from work, I heard a gurgling/boiling sound coming from my engine after I turned the car off. The next day my car started overheating (temp gauge was climbing past the halfway mark). I pulled over and saw that I had no coolant in reservoir. I tried to put some in but it leaked right out the bottom. Since I was a block away from home, I turned the A/C off (this happened the day I used the A/C for the first time, it's been quite warm where I live) and coasted home for the most part. The car would overheat at stops then go back down a bit when accelerating. Now the car has a small oil puddle under the driver side toward the front. I checked the oil and it was just above the minimum mark (this was two weeks after having it changed). No milkiness or anything, but darker than usual. Also there was a piece of duct tape floating around not really sticking to anything anymore (maybe it was holding a hose together?)

I've got people telling me it's just a radiator hose, others telling me it's a blown head gasket or cracked block. There hasn't been any white smoke or weird smells or anything like that. I'm having it towed to my mechanic once my tax return comes in, just in case it's a major repair. I'm going to feel real stupid if it turns out it's just a cheap hose problem though!

as far as the overheating, I would check to make sure both speeds of the fan are working. there should be a stickie in the tech how to section.

when your engine gets hot it pushes water into the over flow when it cools down it pulls the water back into the radiator. if your overflow has a hole in it then it will suck air into the radiator. you will not only be low on coolant but you will get air in the system. the overflow is a very important part of the cooling system.

There's the place to start....you have to have a working overflow container.
