Smile Engine shut off while driving. No codes

2002 cruiser 97,000 miles. New timing belt, new head gasket work. Engine quits but still cranks over. Shut off is sudden with no pre existing conditions.
Re-starts after cooling down. Driving distance before next failure gets shorter each time. No engine codes at all. Is there a ignition module that is going bad or coil? Can you offer the best course to pursue? Thanks, Steve

There is a ignition module in the steering column, sometimes they fail(open circuit and kill power to pcm) when you pull over and you restart the car it will fire right over. They are about 50$ at the dealer(get a mopar one) and take about an hour to change you need some torx bits and 1/4 drive.

Other thing that can cause intermitant stalling is the cam sensor, sometimes will leave a code sometimes not.

Lastly I had a 05 PT GT, I had to change the PCM, co-piloted it and was loosing bus communications hence no code, most likely for that situation is issue with the instrument cluster( when car sometimes died cluster would act up, gauges go funky etc) or PCM. I guessed cluster and then PCM so I lost!
garkeller likes this.

Similar issue has been reported due to ground wire in the steering column, you can test this by moving the steering column up & down, and see if it changes the result......This usually only affects the radio & display though.

Thanks for the input. When it dies it still cranks over but won't start till it gets cold. Then starts right up till the next shut off.
