I'm in the process of changing the timing belt and water pump on my 2.4 na PT. When I pulled the timing cover this is what I found (see pics). It appears most of the build up is in the lower half of the cover,,,,from the tensioner down. I pulled the crank gear but the seal doesn't appear to be torn. Any other ideas,,,or is it probably from the crank.

It could actually be from just the crank seal,and just getting slung all over the place by the belt,tensioner pulley,cams,etc.......Seems more concentrated around the crank seal.....If your doing the TB & WP,your already most of the way there,might as well change it also,given it's probably the original,and has 180k on it.....Lots of good info here:

I think that the cam and valve cover gaskets should also be changed. They wont show tearing, they just ware out.
