Default Nkock/clunk from front suspension

Hi again guys, back here for more help.

My 2001 2L Limited has a distinct metalic knock from front drivers side (UK), LHS looking from front. When I leave work I have to turn a left hand corner which has a small road drain where the drivers side wheel rides into. This drain is not a dramatic drop but at that point I have a full lock on to turn corner just at that point I get the knock. Obviously at this point most of the weight shifts to that side of the car.

I have had both lower wishbones replaced (not sure if this is the correct name but I am sure you will understand), I have also replaced all bushes on the anti sway bar.

I get no noise from the passenger side.

Any suggestions as to where to look next?

Thanks

Tony

Tony... I would check the "strut mounts" The bearings seem to wear out.

One other possibility is the sway bar bushings where the mount the bar to the k frame.

I 2nd that.......It could be worn stabilizer bar bushings,or even a broken bracket(being a 2001..Rust??);I would also recommend checking the end links, and even the lower control arms while your looking under there.

Thanks Randy and Busted, I have replaced these bushings, and yes, one bolt was sheared already but bushings replaced and bolted up tight. That is where I thought the problem was originally.

Skyking, I was not aware of bearings in the struts, I shall see how to check these, I guess this must be at the top of the strut.

Regards

You are correct.....The part you see on the left & right when looking inside the bonnet(engine compartment),with 3 nuts & bolts; That part is the 'bearing plate',the top of the strut goes thru the bearing plate, and has 1 nut on top of it.

If it is a knock when going over a bump on full lock, it is most likely to be the bearing, as they start to knock first, then the plastic part (should be metal imo) cracks and it starts to grind when you turn to full lock.

As I drive a very low PT and the roads in Kent are not the best, I see this about once a year. I have also recently found that rather than having to replace the top mount and the bearing at 70 for the pair, you can just get two bearings for 20 the pair from Car parts Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge, American.

I would recommend checking the condition of the bushing in the top mount first as if, this has gone, you will have to get the 70 kit. To check it, get someone to sit in the car and turn the steering back and forth to full lock repeatedly. Whilst they do this, look at the bolt on the top of the suspension. If the bolt stays still or rotates on the same spot and you hear a grinding noise, it is just the bearing. If the bolt moves left and right 2-5mm, you will need the top mount and the bearing.

Not sure if I did this correctly. I lifted front end, and got my wife to move steering wheel lock to lock, no noise and the top bolts did not move at all! Should they have rotated?

The only thing you did wrong was lift the front end, do it with the car on the ground.
