Question Can't fill tank quickly - Missing flapper door?

Hi All! Just recently I am unable to fill the fuel tank unless I barely pull the trigger on the gas pump nozzle.

My question is this: Is there a small metal flapper where you put the nozzle in? I swore I used to have one and now it's gone - I fear it's now in the filler neck.

Could someone deny/confirm this little flapper door?!!

Thanks so much!

Thanks! Not sure if that makes it a harder or easier problem to solve.

Yes, there's a silver disk type flapper door on mine. Down about 3 inches from the top. I'll see if I can get a picture.

There is a flapper on my '05.

What year/model is your PT?

BUSA's is an 06 - 2nd gen.

Maybe it is a generational issue.

So I guess it is somewhere down the fill pipe. Great!

I found other posts on the same topic - but none that mentioned this little flapper - probably missing on other cruisers too.

A possible remedy to your gas fill problem might be to install a touchless gas cap. I found one that works well as long as it's installed upside down. It has it's own flap. It fits fine even though it's not listed as fitting the 1st-Gen PT.

I'm not sure if there is clearance with the stock gas door, but it's only about 12$ on eBay. Here's the link:

Thank you Handy_Cruiser. I will look into that.

I need to retrieve the flapper - I think it's blocking my flow while filling.

Need one of these: USB Endoscope to see what's going on.

It might be. But I just fingered not having the flapper might be affecting the siphon effect of the fuel nozzle.

The chances of being able to retrieve the original flapper without disassembling the tank fill tube assembly are almost zero. Even if you could grab it with something, I don't think it will fit past the piece where it originally went. You would most likely have to dissemble the tube to get it. Assuring it has fallen all the way down into the tank is your likely best bet.

You could try using a piece of rubber hose and see if it will go down into the fuel tank unimpeded. A brass welding rod would work good too or some flexible copper plumbing pipe. Don't use steel. It poses a very minor but real spark hazard.

Thank-you for the insight. It does look like a challenging repair.
