Default What all should be done?

Just looking for a little guidance. My 2001 pt cruiser has obviously been neglected due to previous owner. Now I want to change that. Has 192000 on it. Just did braked all around. Tierod s are good. Ball joints are also good. No idea when timing belt was changed or if it was done right. But previous owner said it was done a year or so ago. What all should be done to the car?

Trans filter fluid change. Control arm bushings. Motor mounts. Belts plugs wires. Dose PT give any problems running, driving, or waring tires?

The first thing I'd do is change all the fluids, plugs and wires. That way YOU know when those were done and go from there.

"A year or so" since the timing belt could mean several years so see if you can pull the upper cover off to see what the belt looks like although that's not a real good way of telling if it needs to be changed. If you decide to do it, add the alternator and serpentine belts too.

Have you had it up in the air to check the whole suspension? If the bushings were never done, I'm sure they need replacing. Check all the motor mounts.

OK. Here's the list of everything I have done

Calipers . Pads. Rotors. Shoes. Oil change. Plugs and wires. Shifter bushings.

Car drives perfectly. And is not wearing the tires at all. I have the "full front suspension bushing kit" that the previous owner bought. I know for a fact that it needs the following

Rad flush "antifreeze is rusty"
Watts link "inspection I had done told me this"
Rear wheel bearings "when I checked them when I did the brakes they were bad"
Another oil change
Body work "car was hit with a plow so the previous owner told me and banged up the pass side a bit. Also needs rockers and the bottom of the doors sanded down and por15"
Lower rear control arm bushings
Sway bar links "as I am sure they will break when I do the control arm bushings"

It's a 2001 5 speed. 2.4 n/a

Below is the list of just about everything I have bought and done to my 2001 PT Cruiser. And the order is fairly chronological.

Notice that the most important, the timing belt, is not listed since mine appears to have recently been changed before I bought the car. Timing belt (with tensioner and water pump), spark plugs and good plug wires should likely be the first things that need to be addressed.

NKG Iridium Spark Plugs
8 mm Plug Wires
Valve Cover Gasket
Flushed cooling system and added modern antifreeze
Thermostat
Tailgate Hatch Gas Lift Supports
New Keyless Entry Remote
2004 OEM Chrysler Stereo/CD Player
2004 Chrylser LHS OEM floor mats
iPod Auxiliary Input
Both Rear Brake Taillight Housings
New Rubber Antenna
Left Front and left back window lift motors
Complete salvage sunroof assembly
Power Window Switch
Rear Wiper Grommet, nuts, bolts, plug
Salvage steering column
New hood prop rod
New front brakes
New drive belts
Custom K&N Style Air Filter
NOPI Twin Strut Tower Bars
LED Light Repair to Power Window Switch
Designed and performed aluminum can repair to the fog light switch
OEM Chrome Base Ball Shifter from 2004 turbo PT
OEM silver accelerator and brake peddles from 2004 turbo PT
Installed new dash, mixed paint to match original W8 taupe color
Replaced pealing center dash bezel.
Installed missing underseat drawer on passenger side
Mounted underseat drawer on driver side
Installed OEM wing on rear hatch
Cabin Air Filter and housing
Bought reburbed ECM to eliminate P0601 code
Replaced missing owner's manual
Replaced bad left rear speaker
Vauxhall Corsa low profile rear window wiper
Replaced alternator
Chrome tire valve covers and caps
Chrome billet gas cap door
Chrome billet door lock pulls
Touchless "InStantfill" 41004 gas cap
Chrysler wing emblem installed on engine vanity cover
OEM Mopar subwoofer (yet to be installed due to weather)
Custom red-dot DEPO backup lights (on order)
Console cup holder rubber mats (on order)

And now I'm really ready to get started.

Well, I crawled under the car and took some photos, Thanks for the list. I am pretty sure the previous owner lied when he said he did the timing belt considering what I have just seen under the car.

More to come soon.

Moderate to heavy rust from salted roads.

If you've already bought the car, repair exhaust first so you don't breath the carbon monoxide. Then consider sand blasting the underside and having a good undercoat applied. Those from colder climates can probably tell you more. We good folks blessed with what is supposed to be a warmer climate have less experience with this. But if this winter is any indication, we may be dealing with this much more in the future.

is that the fill tube for the gas tank? that's a little scary.

the black mark on the exhaust where it leaks, mine has a crack right there too. i like it. it gives it a little bit of a burble at low speed and makes it just a hair louder when i floor it. been that way since i bought it. here's a link to a video of how it sounds My car just got slower

if you get a cheap $30 intake off ebay, it'll sound just like mine when you floor it. (:

Rust rot. The automotive kiss of death.

Time to head south and look for a rust free chassis.
