Default 03 Transmission Problem

My girlfriends pt has started acting strange sometimes. Sometimes it doesnt want to change gears. its an auto trans. You'll have to pull over and shut the car off, but you can start it right back up and it shifts fine. anyone have any ideas what it could be.

Mike, what mileage does your GF's PT have and has the trans ever been flushed?

It has a little ove 200,000 miles on it. I did change the fluid and filter the other day but that didn't help. I didn't do a complete flush. It only does it every now and again. It might not do it for a month. I was thinking it may be something electrical since you can shut the car off then start it up and its fine.

Now that is a record of sorts for a PT with an automatic 200,000K +miles!!

It sounds more like fluid pressure related. You may get some ATX fluid additive/treatment like Red Line or Amzoil. It may help what may be simply some varnish build up around the servos and or the solenoids. You could get the transmission TCM scanned but I do not see the need at this time given the infrequency of the issue?

I'll try that. I forgot to mention that their are no check engine lights or anything.

Mike, you would not necessarily get a PCM, DTC from the TCM. So it is inconclusive.

I have over 218,000 on my 2007. It does start shifting slower when the fluid lever starts to drop. It has a leak so i do have to keep my eye on it.

WOW!
I love reading about these automatic's going on with so many miles!!!

If this keeps up it may be another forum myth about the PT Cruiser automatics failing with low miles on them?

Just with anything. You will have both extremes with almost anything. I've seen many autos with lots of miles with the chrysler 4 bangers.
