Unhappy vacuum sucks..

this site has really helped me lately. I had to do the whole head replacement because of timing belt. I had it all together but wouldn't idle & just die. took everything back off to double check timing. (did compression check to make sure no bent valves. now it still won't idle unless I take the hose off the pcv valve. the valve works, but if i put it back on it dies again. I also cleaned the pin valve on top of the throttle body. also compressed the egr valve to make sure the diaphragm was working. my wife is starting to get mad lol. when the hose on the pvc valve is off it idles fine & it has plenty of power. help

Just to get the no brainers out of the way... is the PCV connected in the right direction?

lol yes it screws into the valve cover one way. it's a 2001 2.4 dohc. the timing belt broke, the valves hit each other & bent. we had a shop do the belt,& I got a rebuilt head. they put it all together & 5 months later the engine light came on so we took it back & had bad compression on #4. it cost $3,500 the 1st time & they wanted another $1,500 to do it again. I said screw it & replaced the head myself.. I am a journeyman diesel mechanic & could not believe what a pain it was to get to the timing belt but the head was simple. I take it back apart to check the timing & actually did it in under 5 hours. my timing was right on, compression check good, so I am down to the map, throttle control, egr (I did test the diaphram) oh another thing was after the 1st time I did the head the plugs had a lot of carbon. the plugs now after running are nice & clean. sorry this is so long.

Is the idle valve working?
Is it possible a cam pin is partially sheared?
Do you have any codes?

I knwo you said it is in time but i can tell you that 8 out of 10 people who do the timing belt will get it 1 tooth off and it will not idel it will run ok at some rpms and not at all at others
If it is in time and if the hoses are all correct and the computor is telling it the correct things to do it has no choice but to run Fuel+ Air+ timing= Running engin

are there any codes????
and just a after thought $3500 for a timing belt and water pump is WAY HIGH even at a dealer

well the cams are new. the only code was the battery disconnected code because I disconnected it before I worked on it. I took it apart 2 times to check my timing & was perfect both times. is there a test to check the idle control? my thought is because it runs great with the vacuum hose off that it is starving for air. I forget what the upper solenoid on the throttle body is but it was kinda worn & carbon build up. I cleaned it & made sure the sleeve retracted by hand but didn't know how to test it.
