Default dead ecm? ecu?

hi all newbie here
the scan tool will not establish communication with the 5/06 pt. twin cam, non turbo, auto. the "key dance" was a bust too, did three sequences ending with "on" in less than 5 seconds, the odometer just set there looking at me like well? yeah? what? checked the fuses, all good. repeated the scan tool hookup and the "key dance", me thinks dead engine control module.
question here is, has anyone been able to use a "recycled" ecu? if so what info is required to get one that will work?

does your car run?

reason i ask:
1) keydance quit working on my car about a month ago.
2) some scanners will work on my car, one in particular says "attempting to communicate" and times out, two others work fine. of the two that work, one is an all in one, one has the chips that plug into the cord.

my car runs fine.

Don't wast your money on a junkyard pcm. Has to be vin matched to your pt. Go online like ebay and look for remanufactured. Look for you engine and trans combo and find the best price and free ship and warranty. Should find one for around $169 or less. Can do through the local parts house but twice the price.
