Default Front Main Seal Leak

Hey guys, so while changing my serpentine belt I decided to find out where my oil leak was coming from. It has been a slow weep for a few months now and I finally got a chance to check it out. I was hoping for a leak from something small but it looks like it was the big one

Anyone know how bad it is to replace one? I think I might have to get it done at a shop. I just want to get an idea of what you have to go through to access it. I'm thinking remove the pully, and timing cover, then timing gear?

Any help is appreciated

That's not usual for what I've read here on this forum. I did the front seal on a Sebring 2.4 and there was nothing to it. If I remember right, I just drove a screwdriver through the rubber part at an angle and then pried it out. But if you search the forum, I believe there are some more elegant ways to do it such as drill a small hole in the seal and pulling it out. I know this has been discussed several times.

Of course, the hard part is not the seal. It's removing the timing belt, lower sprocket and everything else that goes along with that.

Here's nifty video. And there's a lot more YouTube:

Inferno..
Make sure it's the seal! Clean the whole area from the PS pump down. It does not seem you have a lot of miles on the car. Common leaks come from the PS pressure line, caused from undetected upper and lower engine mounts vibrating the line. Lots of work you do not want to do if not needed.

Also, I have had 3 turbo PT's and 3 failed lines causing ps fluid to leak along the PS bracket, down the oil pump, to an area near the crankshaft pulley. Just a thought

Thanks guys! And skyking, I'm pretty sure its the main seal. Everything is fine around the PS pump. The leak is coming from all sides of the pully and flinging it around. I even checked up top by taking the upper timing cover bolts off. The cam pulleys have oil on them. Its not the cam seals either because it is dry between the timing cover and head.

Start at page 9. You will see all I learned from doing this on mine. Yours is a second gen. You need to check to see if you have crank walk. This is sometimes the reson for the leak.

He's got the 5-speed. I believe the main bearing/crank walk issue was limited to some automatics between 2005 and 2007. I believe the engines with manual transmissions didn't get the down-graded main bearing with half a thrust face. But I'm not the expert. Someone will need to verify this.

Here's a link to a thread on this:

Another 2007 failed engine: oil streaming - bad crankshaft thrust bearing
