Default No power steering and battery light

We have a 2001 pt cruiser, the other day we started the car and went to pull out but the steering was very hard to turn, we went maybe 2 miles down the road and the battery light came on. Does that mean a belt broke? Is this a hard fix? What do you think a garage would charge? I'm also thinking we may need a new power steering pump since it seems to be leaking power steering fluid from somewhere.

ok if the belt that runs the power steering broke yes you will loose power sterring so thats a could be
how hard is kind of depends on your skill level it is for sure a do it yourtself but its kind of a pain at the same time and probaly messy
You probaly need a hose rather than a power streeing pump, the hoses seem to leak more offten than the pumps quit
My guess at a shop for the power steering belt and the hose is around the $200 range??? could be wrong depends on the labor rate
How many miles are on your 2001???

Sears and other places will test your battery and charging system for free - call ahead and be sure - and get a second opinion.

There's about a 90% chance that your drive belt is gone. And many 2001 PT's seem to have a minor power steering leak. It's very likely the hose.

if you wanted you could power wash that area of the engin compartment and clean the hose up real good then keep checking to see where or what is leaking

Well the garage called to day and said they had to replace both belts because one was missing and the other one was torn, so that's all fixed BUT I asked them about the power steering leak and they said it was due to the power steering fluid being pushed back out of the reservoir, they said they weren't sure why but thought there was a recall on that. I hoping someone heard of this, or know what has to be done.

Recalls are for safety items - I would think they would know where the power steering fluid was going...
