Default 2007 2.4 non turbo died at light

Wife and I have an 07 touring. Gas light came on but the station near us was overpriced so we only put 2 gal in. Leaving there we got about .5mi away and at a stop light the car just died. No symptoms other than not running (so no smoke, odd noises, etc). It will crank just fine but won't catch. Any suggestions? I'm an hour from home. I'm thinking bad gas, just seems like too much of a coincidence. My wife is getting two 5gal gas cans with 89 octane to try to fill it and dilute out the bad gas. Any other suggestions?

What's the mileage on your car? Have you tried to retrieve the codes? I'[m hoping it's not the belt.

Listen for the ticking of the pump as soon as you turn the key on?

Haven't checked the codes yet. The way it just died I'm thinking it's the belt. About 121k on it

Belt is a good bet.
To rule out bad gas, get some starting fluid and spray it in intake - if engine coughs, it means belt didn't break (yet).

So if the belt broke while idling, odds of damage are low, correct?

Pull the eight mm bolts out of the cam sensor and see if the cams rotate while someone tries to start. Dont see any reason to worry about other damage except the covers if the belt wrapped around the sprockets. Bad gas will run rough and still try to start or even still run.

I'll try that tomorrow. Thanks!

Is changing a belt really that tough?
