Question Whistling steering pump?

The other day I had the power steering pump return hose replaced (the low-pressure hose) , and can notice now a very high-pitched 'whistling' sound (QUITE LOUD) which changes pitch as I move the steering wheel.

It seems most noticeable when the engine is cold, but I've also heard it after warm up.

I'm thinking it could be some kind of belt squeal??

Does anyone know if they have to loosen the belt to change the lower power steering hose? I'm thinking maybe the belt wasn't tensioned right, or got some oil on it, or maybe its just not riding right. (or the idler bearings are going?)

Probably time for new serpentine belts anyway - but it just seems like a big coincidence that the power steering hose was just replaced...

The pump is known more for a "groan". Whistle sounds more like a belt.

Depending on mileage this is may be your warning sign to change and flush the power steering fluid. There is a little known check valve in the rack that becomes slowly becomes plugged which can cause the pump along with the rack to fail if the power steering system is not serviced.

QUESTION:

How likely is it that high pitched whistling sound is the serpentine belt pulley and NOT his power steering pump?

(I ask because I just had the shop replace my power steering hose AND the power steering pump and I STILL have that high squeaking sound, and the shop says it is the serpentine belt pulley.)

Give the pulley a shot of silicone spray directly on it's center, if squeal/whistle changes, then it is the pulley.

Thanks for all the hints... I dropped by the shop yesterday morning, and of course THEN it was making hardly any noise. My mechanic topped up the fluid a bit, and it is quieter, but I can still hear it a little from time to time. I'm wondering if maybe that (very slight) sound was always there and I just never noticed?

Anyway I'm going to try the idler lube trick, and investigate that steering rack check valve. (Will ask if the fluid was flushed when the hose was changed, but I imagine not - my mechanic leans rather strongly towards the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" school)

Hmm another good hint to find another "mechanic".

The check valve is none- serviceable , all you can do is flush and refill the Hydraulic power steering system with new fluid.

FYI generally speaking lubricants like WD-40 or Silicone spray etc are extremely flammable. It really is not the best idea to spray a running engine with them. In the case of locating the sources of squeaks, rattles and rolls , the safer method is a spray bottle of water.

I was planning on spraying on a little "RELEASEALL" - it is claimed to be
Non-Toxic
Biodegradable
Non-Chlorinated
Non-Flammable
Non-Toxic

( that written in big bold lettering all over the can... )

Tho - looking at the MSDS, it appears to actually be "moderately" flammable and "slightly" toxic
quicksilverdon and zonoz like this.

Ahah - Just found something interesting, apparently there was a factory TSB:

19-001-04 MAR 04 P/S - Whistling Sound When Steering Wheel is Turned

Does anyone know where I can download a copy? Seems it's got something to do with a special hose replacement - and seeing as I just got the hose replaced...
